MACKENZIE – Some residents of Mackenzie are feeling cautiously optimistic as they keep a close eye on the slowly rising levels of the Williston Reservoir.

In recent months, the water levels dropped close to a 20 year low, leaving many concerned for the economic stability of their community. Williston is frequently used by many residents of Mackenzie to recreate.

It is also used to transport logs and is vital to the operation of the pulp mill. BC Hydro uses the water to generate power. With low inflows and record cold temperatures, this past winter resulted in increased energy demand, therefore lowering the water levels.

According to Mackenzie Mayor Joan Atkinson having the water levels drop can put the community on edge. According to BC Hydro during the last 10 days, the water level is holding steady and slightly increasing.
