CKPG poll results generate discussion

PRINCE GEORGE – Our CKPG news poll this week had the most respondants ever at 4,199.

This week we asked on CKPGToday.ca,  ‘Do you agree with the government’s move to protect the mountain caribou?’

79 percent voted no, and 21 percent yes. The question however raised more questions about an issue that is clearly on the minds of those living in North Central BC.

Don Willimont with the BC Hunter Action Circle says ‘this is beyond hunters its not just about hunting, it’s not just about industry, it’s not just about first nations, there’s tons of user groups.’

There is also a fear that incorrect information is circulating about the Provincial Caribou Recovery Program. Time is not on anyone’s side, according to UNBC Professor Chris Johnson who says ‘herds of caribou are dying as we speak.’

Species at Risk Recovery Executive Director David Muter says over 1000 public comments or questions have already been directed to the province, and over 4,000 people have attended the community meetings. Muter encourages any questions or concerns to be directed to the province to avoid any rumour or misconceptions on the recovery plan.
