KAMLOOPS – In what has become a much-anticipated trek for the Thompson Rivers University men’s volleyball team with the hiatus last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the WolfPack will be heading to Prince George from August 30 to September 2.

The trip to the Northern Capital will serve as a dual-purpose trip. The team will be holding training camp as well put on camps for local volleyball players. TRU has been coming to Prince George for the past 12 years.

“It started out as a camp to get our name out there and expand our recruiting base back in the day, now it’s turned into kind of a training camp for the guys, a way to get them together and have some shared experiences on the road,” said Pat Hennelly, who has been head coach of the WolfPack since 2005-06. “It’s become an annual thing for our guys, and they all look forward to it.”

A volleyball community filled with talent, Prince George has produced over ten student-athletes that have represented the WolfPack men’s team at the highest level of university volleyball in Canada. From Tim Flannigan and Graham Allard in 2005-06 all the way to current players Kyle McKee and Cole Johnston, the ‘Pack have had a Prince George local on their team for the entirety of their time at the U SPORTS level.

“Dan Drezet and Kim Forrest run a great club program up there, it’s one of the stronger programs in the interior so credit to them,” said Hennelly “What has helped us is identifying young talent and bringing some more excitement to men’s volleyball up there.”

Of course, the camps are about much more than identifying the next WolfPack stars, age groups will run through elementary, middle, junior and senior classes and the camps will be run for both boys and girls.

“We are always trying to get the game out there and let young athletes know that the opportunity exists for them to play volleyball at a high level,” said Hennelly.
