PRINCE GEORGE—The Northern BC Queer Connection Society (NBCQCS) has received a grant from Women and Gender Equality Canada (WAGE) for their Queer History Project. According to the NBCQCS, the project will document, preserve and celebrate the diverse history of the queer community in Northern British Columbia.

“We are thrilled to have the support of WAGE for this important project,” says the organization in a news release. “Northern British Columbia’s queer history is a vital part of our cultural fabric, yet it remains underrepresented and often overlooked. This project will ensure that the stories, struggles, and triumphs of our community are preserved and celebrated for generations to come.”

The Queer History Project will have both an archival element and a documentary.

The archive will provide an repository of historical interviews, documents, photographs, and memorabilia that will serve as a accessible resource for researchers, educators, and the public.

The archive will be built with the help of local historians, including Dr. Theresa Healy, filmmakers 6IX SIGMA Productions, community members, and other organizations. The culmination of the archival process will be a public screening of a documentary about the region’s 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

The documentary will feature interviews with community members, activists and allies. NBCQCS says both the film and the public screening will foster pride, understanding and connection within our community and beyond.
