School District 57 To Become A “Ward” System

PRINCE GEORGE – It was almost two years to the day that MacKenzie Mayor Pat Crook and the Chair for the Regional District of Fraser Fort George went before the Board of Education for School District 57 asking for better rural representation on the board. Today, they got their wish.

Come the October 20th election, the district will be broken down into three wards .. so to speak, with one trustee chosen for MacKenzie, one trustee from the Robson Valley and five from Prince George.

“It’s new. It’s something that the new trustees will have to work through, but it works. And the good thing is folks in Mackenzie and the Robson/Canoe Valley will have someone that they can talk to directly.”

But it will mean the district will have to begin adjusting bylaws to accommodate two out-of-town trustees.
Board Chair Tim Bennett says the new system will also add cost and that will have to be addressed with the upcoming budget.
