Division Growing in Fort St. James Marijuana Debate

FORT ST. JAMES – There is growing confusion over the federal government’s introduction of legislation to legalize the use of recreational marijuana in Canada.  Local governments are struggling to deal with the issue.  The latest community in the marijuana spotlight is Fort St. James.

Like so many other municipal politicians across the country, the Mayor and Council at the District of Fort St. James is grappling with how to deal with the introduction of legalized marijuana.  The issue has created a division in the community as the District meets Wednesday night to vote on a bylaw amendment that will ban the production and sale of marijuana in Fort St James.

Proponents of the bylaw amendment say it’s all about good planning.  At this moment, anyone can set up a shop that would cater to the needs of marijuana users, selling everything but cannabis.  And without the change in the bylaw, proponents warn the shop could be set up virtually anywhere, including near a school.

Opponents are concerned once the bylaw is in place, it will be difficult to remove after the federal government introduces legislation to allow for the legal production and sale of recreational marijuana.
