Local Vet Clinic Appeals to Rabbit Owners
PRINCE GEORGE — A local veterinary clinic is appealing to rabbit owners. A recent outbreak of the highly contagious Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease on Vancouver Island has now spread to the Lower Mainland and its a cause for concern for rabbit owners in Prince George.
Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease is extremely infectious among rabbits and causes internal bleeding and organ damage. Infected rabbits can show some symptoms but often die suddenly after signs of lethargy. Even rabbit fur, remains, cages and materials used to care for an infected rabbit can spread the disease.
The disease does not impact other animals or humans.
The Prince George Veterinary Hospital is putting in an order for the vaccine against the disease this week and is hoping to reach out to rabbit owners urging them to contact them or their local vet.
