AWAC Moves Ahead With Housing Project
It’s upward and onward for the Association Advocating for Women and Community with respect to a transitional housing project in the former Economy Inn. The re-zoning application was at public hearing this week and passed without a single objection. With that hurdle cleared, AWAC met with architects this week.
“I’m really excited,” says Connie Abe, Executive Director for AWAC. “I just met with the developer and the architect and we did a walk through, started talking about what we would like to see happen.”
The plan is to convert the motel into a 30-unit transitional housing facility where clients can stay for as little as three months or as long as three years. There will be a community kitchen in the basement as well as 24-hour security.
The original plans was to have the facility open in the spring, but the walk out revealed that timeline as a bit ambitious. AWAC now hopes to throw open the doors in July.
