Businesses who dispose cardboard at the Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill will have to pay more beginning January 1st. It’s part of the Commercial Cardboard Diversion Program to reduce recyclable materials coming into landfills each year.
Businesses that produce more than 25 per cent of the overall waste in cardboard will be charged an additional 50 per cent surcharge. However, beginning January 1 acceptable amounts of cardboard will be reduced to 10 per cent and the surcharge will double.
“When it comes to getting rid of cardboard, we want to encourage the business community to look at other options for disposal,” said Laura Zapotichny, Waste Diversion Program Leader.
