Women in Indigenous Leadership Panel

Nov 24, 2017 | 1:19 PM

The Women in Indigenous Leadership panel took place this afternoon at UNBC. The panel included five women from the Council for the Saik’uz First Nation, including Chief Jackie Thomas. The all-women council took this opportunity to share the stories that inspired them to become leaders in their community, as well as the challenges they have faced being part of a band council.

“They’re up against government regulations, the Indian Act, which can constrain what a band council can and cannot do,” said Annie Booth, organizer.

Booth also mentioned that many of the challenges the band council faces are external, including resource and economic development.

The panel is part of the Inspiring Women Among Us events taking place throughout November.
