Local Historians Honoured In 33rd Annual Jeanne Clarke Memorial Awards
The nomination period is open for the 33rd annual Jeanne Clarke Memorial Awards. The awards recognize published books that dig into Northern BC’s history, as well as groups or individuals that have significant contributions to local history. Dr. Jonathan Swainger was awarded one of the publication awards earlier this year. “For a community like Prince George to recognize the work of local historians is to recognize that there is a very special story to tell here,” said Swainger. He was chosen for his book Aspiration: A History of Northern British Columbia to 2015.
Library Board members take nominations until January 5th, then they decide on three winners. “We’re looking for works that have a good scholarship, including great research and good accuracy. We’re also looking at presentation,” said Chief Librarian, Janet Marren. “We’re looking at the accessibility, the audience appeal, and the readability of the work.”
This year’s awards event will take place on February 18th. Registration for the public is required. To nominate someone deserving in the community you must write a letter clearly identifying the nominee, why you’re nominating them, and which category you’re nominating them for. Nominations can be sent to outreach@pgpl.ca, faxed to the attention of Darcie Smith, Community Outreach Librarian at 250-563-0892, or mailed to 888 Canada Games Way, Prince George, B.C., V2L 5T6.
