Thefts Common During The Holiday Season

A Prince George family is sharing their story after their house was broken into and many of their belongings stolen last week. Tara Henderson said she came home from work to find their home had been ransacked. Things like clothing, heirlooms, guns and ammunition, and Christmas gifts were stolen. Henderson said the thieves broke in through an open window in broad daylight. “They went through my bedroom window, that’s my safe zone and where I go to relax,” she said,”it felt gross to know someone was in my room, touching my things.” Her family is making some changes to make sure it doesn’t happen to them again like installing a camera and alarm system.

“Not everyone can afford a security system, sometimes a noisy dog, a nosy neighbour, can help prevent theft,” said Community Policing director, Linda Parker. Parker recommended people let their neighbours know before leaving for the holidays and to make sure the house looks lived in. She also suggested people ensure nothing valuable is visible from the windows of your home or car, as theft is about the opportunity.  “Thieves don’t take a holiday break over the season, I would argue they’re even more motivated over the holiday season.”
