Victory For Starlane Drive Residents
PRINCE GEORGE- It’s a victory for a tight-knit community that’s been advocating for a neighbourhood park since September. The group brought forward a detailed presentation to city council after the playground at Starlane Park was taken down with no plans to rebuild. “I had a feeling that we needed to present some concrete numbers in order to make the point we were making make sense,” said Starlane Drive resident, Byron White. The presentation included the number of kids at each nearby household, the distance to Starlane Park from each of their homes, and the roundtrip distance to the nearest park with a playground.
After that meeting in September, city council asked city staff for an estimated cost of rebuilding the playground. Staff came back with a report in January, saying the park would cost about $70,000. It recommended that council consider the park for replacement in 2021, but councillors unanimously decided that wasn’t soon enough and moved the park be rebuilt later this year.
“We are overjoyed. It was a surprise, we were hoping to be considered for 2021 and the fact that they moved forward and were so supportive, we are very grateful to our city council,” added Bonnie White.
