Students With Green Thumbs

PRINCE GEORGE- Duchess Park Secondary is already known as a ‘green school’. Now, it’s going greener. The first ever gardening club has gained a lot of steam this year, so much so, that there will be a new elective to choose from in September. The popularity of the club may have something to do with the aeroponic gardening towers the school purchased this year.  “We’re excited because we’ve had enough students sign up that next year we’ll run a horticulture class as an elective and we’ll get to green up the school from the inside out,” said teacher, Amanda Frost, “it will be a fun time the first time around because the students will really drive what we choose to do for the course.” The food grown on the towers is free for students to take, but it’s also used by students in cooking classes.

A few grade twelve students have joined the club this year, as they feel it’s their responsibility to give back before they graduate.  “Over the course, I’ve learned to appreciate gardening but one of the main reasons I’ve done it is because we’re hoping to implement a composting system within the school, in addition to the other recycling we already do,” said student, Anthony Preston, “from the compost we would be able to get soil to  use with the horticulture club so they would work together very well.”
