NCLGA Underway
PRINCE GEORGE – Civic officials are in Fort Nelson this week taking part in the annual North Central Local Government Association meeting.
Not surprisingly, wildfire response and wildfire mitigation dominate the package of resolutions at this year’s meeting. The City of Quesnel has two wildfire-related resolution at NCLGA.
“We have forests that are maladapted to the current climate,” says Mayor Bob Simpson. “They’re stressed, there’s drought. People are worried about flooding right now, but our forests are dry. We’re one day away, one spark away from being into an early wildfire season. And we don’t seem to have a sense from the government that they have a strategy that really embraces the levels of threat.”
However, Mayor Lyn Hall suspects marijuana legislation will be a hot topic, even though anything resolved will be too late to take to the Union of BC Municipalities convention in September, with the legislation set to kick in July 1st.
