Wildfires Continue in Prince George Fire Centre

PRINCE GEORGE – With a total of 354 wildfires in the Prince George Fire Centre so far this year and warm temperatures in the forecast, wildfire crews are looking ahead to a busy long weekend.
There are three wildfires of note in the centre including the Chutanli Lake fire west of Quesnel, which has now burned 870 hectares. The Mckirdy Mountain fire, 2 km east of the Village of Valemount municipal boundaries sits at 35 hectares, and the Purvis Lake fire 20km east of Takla Lake sits at 1100 hectares.
Smoke in the Prince George area is likely coming from the Shovel Lake fire, north of Fraser Lake, which sits at 5100 hectares and is only 10 percent contained.
More than 180 firefighters and support staff from Saskatchewan, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico are heading to B-C to help crews battle the hundreds of wildfires burning across the province. The B-C Wildfire Service says the new recruits will join the more than 22-hundred people engaged in the wildfire response, including firefighters from Alberta and the Northwest Territories. Four water-skimming aircraft from Quebec will also join more than 150 aircraft that are being used to support ground crews.
