There’s A New Champion In Town

PRINCE GEORGE – Each year a new Aids Walk Champion is chosen in the Prince George Community prior to the annual Aids Walk. This years champion is someone well connected to the aboriginal community, who knows the ins and outs of Positive Living North and is a member of the Lheidli T’enneh Council.

The previous Executive Director for Positive Living North, Vanessa West has been named this year’s Aids Walk Champion. The Champion is someone who is out every day educating people on HIV/AIDS and promoting PLN. West was chosen because of her passion for helping and supporting people living with AIDS. She was also instrumental for starting the Fire Pit Drop-In Centre.
Judy Mitchelle, the Support Services Manager at PLN says West was an easy choice for this year’s champion.

West spent 11 years working with PLN and says it was a tough decision stepping away from it. Being the Aids Walk Champion is her last role with the agency and she was more than happy to accept it.

A few of the previous champions have been Dr Pierre Ducharme, Murry Krause when he was the executive director for Central Interior Native Health Society and UNBC professor Tess Healy. Following them, West plans to bring her own ideas to the position, some reflecting her current roles with the Lheidli T’enneh Council and the BC Assembly of First Nations.
