PRINCE GEORGE – In Prince George this weekend “Makers” from all over will be taking part in the Mini Maker Faire at Two Rivers Art Gallery. “Makers” are people who put together their own “do it yourself projects” and share them with other creative minds.

Engineers, artists and scientists are showing off their one of a kind projects at the Mini Maker Faire on Saturday. It’s an event for people who enjoy learning and love sharing what they can do. From the Art Gallery to the Public Library DIY projects like soap making, Lego construction, woodworking and more will be on display. There will also be interactive workshops to take part in to inspire other “makers” who are just starting out.

The Two Rivers Art Gallery wants to continue to grow the event each year by inviting more than just local creators. In partnership with Emily Carr University of Art and Design, The Gallery was able to bring in members of the Zenga Brothers an art group from Vancouver. One of the brothers, Benny Zenga says they make their projects from recycled materials and believe in making the most of what you have.

“It’s really exciting because I am someone who has grown up always making things. My dad always had this sort of saying ‘Tools not toys.’ He gave us tools when we were young and we were always building and taking things apart. To see this ‘maker’ movement and people be introduced to the idea that making is just a part of life and taking things is a part of life I think is a wonderful thing.”

Emily Smith, an artist who creates with the Zenga Brothers, has taken part in the Maker Faire a few times now. She says the reason she keeps coming back is because it’s one of the only places you can see so many custom built projects in one place. As an artist shes excited to take part in the process of learning and be inspired by others.

“They’re really simple sort of DIY projects that anyone could do in their home. I also battle with screen time so it’s a really great way to get off your phone, start making something and really connect with the people in your family and in your community.”

The Mini Maker Faire is a free event from 10 until 3 pm on Saturday. The Gallery is calling it a day of “Show and Tell” for all ages.
