New Botanical Garden Coming To UNBC

PRINCE GEORGE – The David Douglas Botanical Garden Society and UNBC are joining forces, again, for the betterment of the community.
The university has recently signed off on a concept design and business plan submitted by the Society for a new botanical garden on the southwest corner of the campus in what is currently a green space between the Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre and the on-campus daycare.
“The big dream is to build a full-fledged botanical garden, about 23 acres, to model it after other botanical gardens,” explains Linda Naess, President of the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society. “To have the educational piece of it, the research part of it, a building and events. It will be only the third botanical garden in a boreal forest in the world. But that’s not all.
“It’s the Northernmost botanical garden in Canada,” explains Shelley Rennick, the Director of Facilities for UNBC. “There is a botanical garden in Edmonton but, if you take a look at the longitude and latitude, we are going to be the northernmost botanical garden in Canada.”
