Students Hold Their Own Elections

PRINCE GEORGE – While thousands of Prince George residents headed to the polls over the weekend,  so did hundreds of students in the area the week before, participating in mock elections.

Students in Sherry Toninato’s grade 5 classroom at Cedars Christian are comparing their votes to those of the Prince George election.  After weeks of learning about the municipal election, and a trip to city hall,  the students staged their own mock election on Friday.

Toninato says “part of grade 5 curriculum is studying government so I switched the way I teach, because I usually teach in later in the year in January,  to line up with the municipal election.”

With ballots that were exactly the same as what adults used,  the students took roles parallel to those in Saturday’s vote from being a voter to scrutineer to voting clerk.

The Grade 5’s joined hundreds of others in Prince George and over 60-thousand through the province from 538 schools, representing 105 municipalities and regional districts.

If the Grade 5 students had their say,  Lyn Hall would still have claimed the Mayors chair,  but Brian Skakun, Terri McConnachie and Murry Krause wouldn’t have won seats on council.  Instead this class favoured Chris Wood,  Cameron Stolz and Dave Fuller.

It’s hoped the lessons learned today will help them to make big decisions about 8 years down the road,  when they are legally able to cast their ballot.
