Nusdeh Yoh Elementary Making History

PRINCE GEORGE – There were a few eager students performing at the Nusdeh Yoh Elementary Remembrance Day assembly Friday morning.

For one grade 5/6 class, the assembly was one last chance to practice their significant performance. They’ll be reciting “Oh Canada” and “In Flanders Fields” in their native language at the city’s Remembrance Day Ceremony on Sunday. Language teacher Edie Frederick says they will be the very first Indigenous group that will partake in a veterans ceremony at this level.

“I’m very excited, I’m very proud and I’m very proud of my students that are stepping up to do this. They’re representing their school, doing this in Dakelh. It’s just the icing to the cake.”

Although some of the students are nervous, Fredrick says this is about more than just the opportunity to take part in the event.

“You can do anything you want, that’s the whole idea behind this because I see most of our students as they grow up they need their self-esteem you know and we need to nurture that and build and you know after we do that, anything is possible with them.”

The city’s Remembrance Day ceremony will begin at 9 am on Sunday at the Civic Centre and Nusdeh Yoh will be performing at 10. They will be followed shortly after by the parade, wreath laying and the two minutes of silence at the Cenotaph.
