Water main break another infrastructure problem

PRINCE GEORGE – While the hole is now filled, a water main break on Third Avenue was another reminder that this city has aging infrastructure.

Late yesterday afternoon, the main ruptured, spilling water as far into the downtown as Second and Victoria. Crews were on the scene quickly and were forced to shut the road down. A large section of road had to be dug up to repair the line, which was originally installed in the mid-1950s. Add it to the list of repairs the City has had to do and at significant cost.

“You have to look at what we have planned for and what we have to get ahead of. And you have to look at things as they happen, as they happen,” says Councillor Susan Scott. “And we’ve got an excellent group of people who are weighing both sides of that point and examining on a case-by-case basis. What has to be done right now? Like Third Avenue. And what could maybe wait a month?”

The aging infrastructure in the city has been the source of much anxiety by City Hall for several years.
