Transit fares changing
PRINCE GEORGE – Council has approved some changes to the fee structure of Prince George Transit.
A presentation was made to Council looking at a pair of options. One would see modest increases to fares, such as adding $10 to the semester fare for students, moving it from $125 to 135. The Handi-Dart fare would increase by 25 cents, which was a concern for Councillor Murry Krause, who pointed out that those who use that service are often on a fixed income and 50 cents for every return trip adds up.
Prince George Transit says the cost of operating the bus system is fifty cents higher than other comparable systems, “which may be partially attributed to the climate, sprawl of the city, unique topography and development pattern.”
Prince George Transit argues the increases would help offset the cost of running bus services, as well as pay for some new technologies that are coming in the future. For example, BC Transit plans to introduce “tap” technology in the future and GPS services this fall.
The hope is that the changes will make it more attractive to passengers and future passengers.
