Red Deer, AB – After swapping their second overall pick to the Winnipeg ICE for their third overall pick, the Cougars drafted back-to-back Alberta boys to kick off their 2019 WHL Bantam Draft day.

The Cats first selected defenceman Keaton Dowhaniuk from OHA Edmonton Bantam Prep, then with the next pick in the draft, they picked up Dowhaniuk’s teammate, Koehn Ziemmer.

Dowhaniuk recorded eights goals and 27 assists in 25 games this season, while Ziemmer led the team in scoring with 37 goals and 39 assists.

The Cougars also added a local talent to the roster with a trade that brings 2018 Bantam Draft pick Fischer O’Brien to the roster. O’Brien is the younger brother of former Cougar and Spruce King Brogan O’Brien, who finished his time with the team after the 2017-2018 season.

Fischer was selected in the fifth round of last year’s Bantam Draft by the Lethbridge Hurricanes and spent this last season with the BCMML Champion Cariboo Cougars. The trade sends the Cougars 18th overall draft pick from 2017, Tyson Phare, to the Hurricanes. The defenceman played fourteen games with the Cats this season, failing to record any points.

The Cougars drafted eight more times after the first round, selecting five forwards, two defencemen, and one goalie. For a complete list of the Cougars picks, click here.
