SMITHERS — The Smithers RCMP has released more details following Saturday’s (May 4) deadly crash that killed three people and injured a fourth.

Sgt. Darren Durnin says his detachment received a report of a small plane in distress at about 8:45 a.m. Saturday, adding a safety device tracked the plane northwest of Fort Babine, a small community on Babine Lake.

He says first responders, including a team of helicopters, arrived to find a remote location, forested with rugged terrain.

“A conscious male passenger was seen outside the crash site, but due to the landscape the helicopter was unable to land,” says Durnin. “Instead, the helicopter performed a hover exit at a more distant location, allowing trained rescue personnel to exit the helicopter and make their way through the terrain, to the crash site.”

He says the other three people did not survive the crash and says the lone survivor was airlifted to hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Durnin says the Smither RCMP are continuing their investigation with the Safety Transportation Board Investigative Team, to establish the cause of the crash.
