VANDERHOOF – Change is the wind for the community of Vanderhoof, population 4,400.

New Gold has just received its federal environmental approval for the $1.8 billion dollar Blackwater Gold Mine project south of the community. Provincial approval is expected in short order, according to Mayor Gerry Thiessen.

“We would expect that, within the next couple weeks, we’re going to hear from the Province. We feel very strongly that the company, ourselves, First Nations all see the value of what’s happening here.”

New Gold expects at the height of construction, there will be 1,500 workers on site. Subsequent to that, the mine will 500 workers for the 17-year life of that mine.

But, even sooner, the airport in Vanderhoof will be home to a camp for TransCanada. Initially, there will be 200 workers in that camp as early as this coming June. But this time next year, it will be 900 workers-strong.
