Tree replanting receives big boost in the Cariboo

WILLIAMS LAKE — Over the next two months about 22 million trees will be planted in the area scorched by wildfire in the Cariboo region.

Reforestation efforts will be concentrated to the areas where the fires were the largest in 2017.

Pine, fir and spruce are the main tree species planted in the region. Deciduous trees will also be planted to improve wildlife habitat and enhance biodiversity.

Tree planting will also help to stabilize soils and watersheds in the Cariboo, which will reduce runoff that leads to flooding in the future.

The Province says replanting areas affected by the 2017 wildfires is expected to take about a decade to complete, due to the large amount of land affected and a limited capacity to grow and plant additional tree seedlings.
