Residents Need to be Evacuation Ready

PRINCE GEORGE – The City and other agencies involved with emergency preparedness have been busy preparing for what Mother Nature may throw our way. A reception centre has been established at the CN Centre, muster points have been identified at 18 schools around the city. And now an education campaign to get the word out about that is coming. But the City and Regional District of Fraser Fort George are strongly urging residents to get themselves and families prepared for the event of an evacuation.

“I believe the last two summers have served everybody well in terms of thinking about what happens if the big one hits Prince George and asking ‘How do I get myself and my family better prepared?’ There’s work to do there but I believe people are becoming mroe self-educated and aware of what they need to do,” says Brad Beckett, the Director of Emergency Support Services.

The Regional District has an exhaustive list of the paperwork that should be pulled together. It includes:

passports, birth certificates, marriage certificates, social insurance numbers, insurance policies, driver’s licence numbers, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, income tax returns, wills/power of attorney, health care numbers (including physician contact)/prescriptions, family emergency contacts, pet photos, recent family photos

“All the emergency items that you need. We want people to be ready to sustain themselves, be self-sufficient for 72 hours, even better, for a week,” says Anita de Dreu, Emergency Services Coordinator for the Regional District. “Food, water, can openers, clothing. We want people to have seasonally-appropriate clothing so we recommend that people update their emergency kit at time-change in the spring and fall.”
