PRINCE GEORGE – There was standing room only at an open house hosted by the City, to lay out its wildfire mitigation plans and its evacuation strategy.

As for the wildfire mitigation strategy, the City has partnered with the Regional District of Fraser Fort George to enhance efforts to reduce forest fire fuels from a much larger footprint than just the city limits.

As for the evacuation plan, the City has identified the CN Centre and the Kins Centres the Reception Centres should there need to be an evacuation. Nine zones, which correspond with the garbage zones, have been outlined and 18 schools have been designated within the city as muster points. That’s where individuals who cannot get to the CN Centre will gather to be transported to the Reception Centres.

Adam Davey, the Manager of Emergency Services, says he was “pleasantly surprised” at the turnout in the middle of the day.

“This is great. I think we probably have more than a hundred folks that have come through so far. We certainly didn’t expect this, so great to see so many folks taking an interest in wildfire protection in the city.”

The open house will run through to eight p.m. with another presentation from City staff at 6 p.m.
