Plant sale at UNBC continues to grow every year

PRINCE GEORGE— The annual plant sale put on by the David Douglas Botanical Society brought hundreds to UNBC.

People of all ages came out to check out a variety of plants including annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs and specialty plants. Everything at the sale was grown locally by David Douglas Botanical Society members.

Gardening seems to get more popular every year in Prince George, and it could be for a couple of different reasons.

Many are switching to organic foods. Growing your own food means you’ll know exactly what you’re putting into it and where it’s coming from. Another reason for the popularity of gardening could be for the security of growing your own food. In previous summers, food wasn’t always easily accessible.

“We want to be food secure,” David Douglas Botanical Society President Linda Naess says. “I think we saw that when the fires happened. All of a sudden when the trucks didn’t come north, we were short of fruits and vegetables. We’ve seen a huge increase in the interest of gardening.”

This is the biggest plant sale put on by the David Douglas Botanical Society , but there will be another this summer on July 9.
