Sinkhole closes Connaught Hill Park to vehicles

PRINCE GEORGE — Update: The City of Prince George says repairs on the sinkhole are now complete and the park is once again open to vehicles.

“The stormwater collection system in the area failed, and crews have replaced roughly six metres of old clay pipe that was likely installed in about 1970,” says Senior Communications Officer Mike Kellett. “Crews also fed a camera down into the stormwater pipes around the sinkhole to confirm the integrity of other pipes in the immediate area.”

Earlier: A sinkhole has forced the City of Prince George to close Connaught Hill park to vehicular traffic.

“The cause of the sinkhole is believed to be a failed catch basin, which was installed in the early 1970s,” says Senior Communications Officer Mike Kellett.

He says the City expects that the park to be closed to traffic for a couple of days while repairs are made.

The sinkhole is located directly in front of the park entrance at the intersection of Connaught Drive and Caine Drive.

The City will send out a notice once the park is re-opened to traffic.
