City wants to hear from business

PRINCE GEORGE – The City of Prince George wants to hear from local business, large and small, in order to get a better snapshot of the local labour force and the challenges businesses have in retaining their workers.

“We did conduct a study in 2014 that did identify the top ten occupations in high demand,” explains Christina Doll, Workforce Development Officer for the City of Prince George. “But things have changed. It’s five years later. So we’re hoping that we’ll learn through this process what those occupations are.”

The survey builds on the Business Insights Report, released last fall. That report found that half the businesses survey had challenges retaining their workforce. That is a stark contrast to 2016, when only 6% had the same challenges.

Corey Naphtali, Past-President for the Chamber of Commerce, says the BC economy is pretty healthy right now.

“One of the things that we’re all facing as business owners in Prince George is really that we’re competing, not just provincially, but we’re competing globally. It’s a job seekers market.”

The Insights report identified the healthy business environment in Prince George, paving the way for expansion. But, Naphtali says the lack of a workforce stymies the goal of expansion. He adds the onus is on all businesses to promote Prince George as a great place to live and do business.
