Science students from SD91 do science at UNBC

High School students from around the region have converged on UNBC for a couple of days, taking part in some science labs. The E-BUS program has been around for 25 years and the program in this region is the largest in BC, with thousands of students. The program is a form of distance education, which serves the needs of a vast region.

“There’s different reasons why a school can’t offer a senior science course or any specialized senior course,” says Megan Boniface, the Vice-Principal of EBUS Academy. “Sometimes it’s just the number of students isn’t enough to feasibily run a course or sometimes they don’t have a staff member on with that specialty. And then of course you’ve timetabling.”

But while the EBUS program in this region has been around for 25 years, this is the first time UNBC has been brought into the program. Because of that, the doors were thrown open.

“So we’ve got lots of students who are joining us today who may or may not done Chemistry 11 or Biology 11 with us. But we see the potential in the North in general. This is such a great opportunity for students to learn about UNBC, learn about the programs that are offered here, talk to student research ambassadors and really get a sense of what you can do with a science degree.”

And it has been so successful, Boniface says it will happen again next year and, even perhaps, on a broader scope.
