PRINCE GEORGE–Duchess Park Secondary students ducked out of class early on Friday for the sake of the planet.

The student run group, Fridays for the Future of PG organized a quiet protest–with a petition at the centre of it.

“There is no planet B,” said Sylvia Masich at the protest Friday morning.

“We don’t live in an environmentally friendly town and we’d like to change that culture.” -Sylvia Masich, Co-Organizer of Fridays for Future PG

Parents, children and several students attended the protest outside of City Hall Friday morning.

The goal of the petition is to add recycling bins next to garbage bins throughout the city to deter people from tossing recyclables into the garbage.

Terri McConnachie, City Councillor for the city of Prince George says that the city’s recycling program hasn’t been on the councils top of mind, but believes it should be.

“I think we really need to take a hard look at what does our current recycling look like in our city. Curbside, on the streets in our civic buildings. How are we partnering with large events that we host in our city–what are we doing to address it.” -Terri McConnachie, City Councillor

The petition is currently under 100 signatures with the goal to reach 1,000.
