UNBC study investigates predatory nature of cats

PRINCE GEORGE — A group of UNBC researchers are taking paws to learn more about the predatory nature of cats by launching a new study to see if there are ways to reduce bird kills by cats using high visibility collars.

It’s actually a serious global issue. Bird conservationists estimate cats kill hundreds of millions of birds in Canada annually while in the U.S. that number shoots up to possibly the billions.

As a solution, authors of the study want to know how effective colourful cat collars would be in deterring all the carnage.

Professor Ken Otter says evidence suggests the collars are highly visible to birds and could help reduce bird predation.

To make the study a success, Otter needs a few dozen volunteers who live in College Heights, the Hart and the Foothills/Ginters area.
