VICTORIA–Students from ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱ Tribial School, along with First Nations Chiefs, Elders and representatives from the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council are celebrating their efforts in the successful name change to John Dean Provincial Park.

The new name will include an indigenous twist to it: ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱, John Dean Park,(pronounced Tlay-will-nook.)

The new name translates to “place of refuge,” it received royal assent on May 16, as part of an amendment to the Protected Areas of BC Act.

The park which is located in the North Saanich mountains is known in the local First Nations culture to have been the place that helped save people during the Great Flood, thousands of years ago. Due to the connection to the park, the students from ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱ Tibal School requested the name change.

Updated signs, with the new name will be added during the coming year.
