Steelworkers react to mill closure, curtailments

PRINCE GEORGE — The United Steeelworkers Local 1-2017 has reacted to Canfor’s Vavenby mill closure and curtailments at five West Fraser sawmills.

President Brian O’Rourke says he’s very concerned and notes the impacts on communities – especially rural ones – are real, nothing they impact everything, from supermarkets to families.

He says all the union can do is lobby the provincial government to see if there’s anything it can do to help the industry.

Looking ahead, O’Rourke fears with the current market conditions, more tough times could be ahead.
