Ladies hope to take aviation industry to new heights with more women in field

PRINCE GEORGE–It’s not just boys that can take the highway through the danger zone, girls can too.

Elevate Aviation is a female led, Canadian based organization that aspires to get women into the aviation industry.

“Only six percent of pilots in Canada are females, two percent are aircraft maintenance engineers, 16 percent are air traffic controllers and so in general there are so many careers out there and we just want people to know about them.”- Sophia Wells, Director of advocacy, Elevate Aviation

The young girls spent the day listening to professional females in the industry along with a chance of touring hangers around the airport.

Sophia Wells, Director of Advocacy for Elevate Aviation says that they were granted $400,000 by the Federal Government to look into why they numbers are so low for women in the industry.

She says as they’ve travelled throughout the country and spoken to a vast amount of girls, the underlying issue is that a lot of young women simply don’t know about career opportunities in aviation.

The group hopes to change that by visiting more cities nationally and internationally next year to continue to inspire women to take the leap into the industry.
