Meals on Wheels looking for volunteers after doubling in size in past year

PRINCE GEORGE–Meals on Wheels more than doubled in size over the past year, and the current amount of volunteers isn’t enough to keep up with demand.

The program is serving 1,000 meals a month which is more than double what they were providing last year. Nicole Currie, Meals on Wheels Coordinator says they are desperate for volunteers and are currently looking to add one driver a day and two replacement drivers to their fleet.

“The program has doubled in size since last year where we were averaging 450 meals a month, now we are up almost 1,000 meals in a month.”– Nicole Currie, Meals on Wheels Coordinator

Volunteers start their day off by picking up the freshly cooked food, and delivering it throughout their pre-determined routes which usually takes about an hour. However due to the influx in clientele it’s taking longer.

Elizabeth Schepp has been a Meals on Wheels Client for six months after getting out of the hospital for back issues.

“I came out of two days in hospital last January, and I was so sick I knew that I needed food. What could I do? I wasn’t going to do it because I was too sick. I phoned Meals on Wheels the minute I got home and they had a meal for me that very day!” Elizabeth Schepp, Meals on Wheels client

Currie also mentions that this is more than just delivering food to seniors, for some of the clients it’s the only interaction they get all day.

Menu changes are made every month so that clients tastebuds don’t get tired of the same food over and over. Meals on Wheels costs $7 a meal and can be prepaid through e-transfer, cheque or cash.

Forms to volunteer are available at the Seniors Resource Centre, 721 Victoria Street, Prince George.
