PRINCE GEORGE— Conversations around mental health are slowly becoming more accepted. The Annual Ride Don’t Hide event in Prince George created conversation surrounding mental health, all while raising money for the Canadian Mental Health Association.

1 in 5 Canadians will personally experience a mental health problem or illness.

Brooklyn Derksen was this year’s spokesperson and she shared her experiences with mental health.

Brooklyn Derksen speaks to Ride Don’t Hide participants.

“The more we talk about it, the more it becomes okay to talk about it. The more we talk about it, the more it becomes normal,” Derksen says. “Anything that is connected to any kind of normalcy or something that is what we do, is easy to incorporate into our everyday lives.”

All proceeds from the event went towards the Canadian Mental Health Association in Prince George. The money will go towards re-building a Clubhouse, which burned down last August.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, there are resources available, including through the Canadian Mental Health Association.
