Blackwater Gold project given environmental assessment certificate
NORTHERN BC–The proposed Blackwater Gold Project was given an environmental assessment certificate, issued to New Gold Inc. Monday, June 24.
The suggested project that would be located 110 km southwest of Vanderhoof and was approved by Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, George Heyman and Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, Michelle Mungall.
New Gold Inc. proposes an open-pit gold and silver mine, that would encompass 4,400 hectares of land, extracting 60,000 tonnes of ore per day. The mine is estimated to have a lifespan of 17 years and is expected to contribute $312 million to BC’s gross domestic product.
According to a press release from the The Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy says that the ministers are confident that the Blackwater project will get the green light considering the assessment report, submissions from Indigenous Nations and the recommendations of the Environmental Assessment Office’s executive director.
