Expanded Transit coming

PRINCE GEORGE – Council has approved an enhanced transit system, come September 2020.An original presentation was made at the June 10th Council meeting, which included an additional three buses put on the road and add four thousand hours of ridership per year. But it came with a bill of $265,000 for the purchase of three buses. Instead it was sent to Council Finance and Audit Committee for more information. That Committee took a deeper look and found that case could be made to expend the money.

“This is not a money-maker,” said Garth Frizzell, Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee. The proposal to increase service came about a survey of ridership and the increased service would take place during peak hours. It is expected the additional hours will increase the revenues to offset the costs. The additional four thousand hours will kick in for September 2020 and another five thousand hours in ridership hours in the fall of 2022.

Part of the decision was made with an eye to new development in the downtown, in particular, student housing adjacent to the Courtyard Marriot. That also passed its final stage at Council last night, with Council approving a variance to the parking stalls.

That was the final leg of the civic involvement in that project, with the developers planning to have shovels in the grounds soon.
