Updates to 9-1-1 system being proposed
PRINCE GEORGE— The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) is proposing enhancements to its 9-1-1 service. The total budget for this project is about $5 million, with $3 million needing to be borrowed, if approved through an Alternate Approval Process.
The current 9-1-1 system is an analog system, and the new one would be a more internet based I-P system.
“It won’t be as reliant on the location as to where a person is or where you live,” General Manager of Communications for the RDFFG Michael Higgins says. “The new system is designed to work with smart technology. All of the cell phones or refrigerators that can make phone calls- all of that new next generation capability that we have, will be able to access 9-1-1.”
There are currently no systems of this kind in Canada, and the RDFFG has been basing their plans around recent deployments of the system in the U.S.
