Families sad to see ‘Strengthening Families Program’ go

PRINCE GEORGE–The Strengthening Families Program in Prince George that aimed at building stronger bonds inside and between families has come to an end after a five-year run.

Rose-Haugrud and her nine-year-old son Ronin Rei were part of the program, for the second and final Strengthening Families session of the 2018-2019 year school year.

“It was awesome. We got a chance to connect with other families and make new friends and learn new ways to parent and really support each other.”–Rose Haugrud

The program, which School District 57 was a partner with saw three schools involved. The sessions were 15 weeks long and followed defined curriculums, with topics such as the benefits of holding family meetings, problem solving between children and parents, the dangers of drugs and alcohol and dealing with peer pressure.

Each session ended with a family activity and a family dinner.

Families from all socio-economic backgrounds participated in the program, some hearing about it through word of mouth.

“I’ve done parenting programs before and this program was incredible because of the parent and the kid component. Some don’t focus on both, and the family unit.”– Cheryl Bateman, Program Coordinator, School District No.57

According to Bateman the program was effective in connecting families and bringing them together and says many families are sad to see the program come to an end.
