WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Canada Day will bring a cause for added celebration for expectant mothers in the Cariboo. Interior Health says full in-patient maternity services will return to Cariboo Memorial Hospital in Williams Lake on July 1.
Maternity services at the hospital were suspended in February due to a shortage of specially-trained nurses. Low-risk maternity services resumed on April 30.
In a news release, Interior Health says the hospital once again has a sufficient number of trained maternity nurses and thus can return to its previous level of service.
The release notes mothers who go into labour before 35 weeks gestation may still be transferred to a hospital with a higher level of care.
