PRINCE GEORGE– The 22nd Prince George Pride Parade will take place this weekend downtown to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community in the city.

The parade is set to start at 11 am on Second Ave and Dominion, a different location from previous years due to the construction in the downtown core. Susan Trabant, President of the Prince George Pride Society says that she has seen the community support grow throughout the years.

“When this was first started 22 years ago, there wasn’t that much community support and the community has totally stepped forward and is very supportive of everything that we do for Pride in Prince George now.” – Susan Trabant, President of the Prince George Pride Society

Theresa Healy has been to every Parade since the first in Prince George in 1997. Healy was played a role in the legalization of same sex marriage in BC. She hopped on the movement after being asked by a local organization at the time to become a part of the case. Healy mentions the struggles she would have faced had the legalization not gone through.”If Wendy had got really, really ill, I would have had no rights to support her in her illness. And in fact, some years later, she did in fact get diagnosed with cancer and I was able to be by her side as her legal spouse.”

Theresa Healy says she’s proud to see how much the community has evolved and how many people come out to support the Pride Parade.

She mentions how after the legalization she and her partner Wendy ran over to the courthouse to be the first same sex couple to be married in the north…only when they got there, they’d been beat by another, excited to tie the knot, couple.

“Oh, we will be out at Pride,” said Healy as she glanced over at her grandkids, “It is amazing to see how far we have come.”

Festivities will continue after the parade, with a festival and a drag show and dance.
