Mackenzie at a loss over mill closure

MACKENZIE – Reaction to the most recent announcement of mill closures from Canfor has been swift. For the Forests Critic, this laundry list of curtailments and closures across the province is reminiscent of a darker time.

“I am very concerned. Going into the greatest recession since the Great Depression, a year or two before that, the forest industry started having these downturns.”

Peter Merkley with the PPWC, which represents the Canfor sawmill workers, says government policy needs to change.

“There are so many logs leaving this town right now and we’re unemployed.”

He says he had a recent meeting with Forests Minister Doug Donaldson recently and came away feeling underwhelmed.
