Prince George building permits record-breaking. Again.

PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George is en par for another record-breaking year in terms of development, based on the number of permits issued in the first half of the year. In 2017, 235 permits were issued. That jumped to 231 last year and 289 permits for the first six months of this year. The number of permits for single family dwellings is about the same, though the value of those permits is up.

“A lot of people who look to BC read what the Vancouver story is and think that ‘s what the whole province is about,” says City Councillor Garth Frizzell. “But in Prince George, we’re seeing a different story altogether.”

He says the building permits are one indication, but he points to the struggles faced by the local Homebuilders Association to harness workers for projects. But the question is: How long can it last?

“Business cycles say that ity goes for a while and then it disappears. But, you know, with some of the big resource projects that we’re seeing, we’ve got high hopes. That’s tempered because forestry is in such dire straits right now.”
