Salmon struggles

Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs ask to stop harvesting sockeye

PRINCE GEORGE — Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs have asked their First Nation and neighbouring Nations to stop harvesting sockeye salmon effective Sunday, July 28th.

The decision comes as salmon returns continue to struggle following a rockslide in the Fraser River a couple weeks ago. On top of that request, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is also closing all recreational fishery for all species of salmon in the Skeena watershed, effective Saturday, July 27th.

It’s an unfortunate call due to the popularity of the area, and is likely to affect local business.
