PRINCE GEORGE – The Arts dominated plenty of discussion around Council Chambers last night. First, Council was asked to approve a new arts strategy. At budget time, Council approved a budget enhancement of $75,000 for create such a strategy, but it became clear early on that the City’s efforts were being mirrored by the Community Arts Council. They opted to join forces to that end.

A consultant will be hired in the near future with a long list of expectations, looking at things like “potential space options” and an assessment of “functional space requirements for arts amenities that contribute to downtown culture ” and the capacity for a concert hall.

The consultant will begin the work in mid-August and the Community Arts Council hopes to have an update by November.

The second arts-related matter was the creation of a new reserve fund. The money for that reserve comes from two sources. The first is $7,000 that was under the control of the Performing Arts Centre Society. Once that Society opted to dissolve, it approached Council to create the reserve for the purpose of planning for a future Performing Arts Centre. That amount of money will be combined with a larger envelope of money that was given to the City “to further efforts towards the provisions of a Performing Arts Centre in Prince George.” That amount is $76,900.
